The hosts is explained in the following link http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Some spyware prgs incorrectly manipulate the hosts file and set the hostname to point to local i.e. it would have a reference something like this.

127.0.0.1 yourftphost

where yourftphost is the host name of your FTP Server, so when a search is done for the host it is redirected back to your workstation, and the lookup fails.

If it has been redirected just delete the entry and reboot, and check that the spyware prg hasn't put the entry back.
