Carter attempted a rescue of the American embassy staff taken hostage in Iran. However of the eight helicopters involved three failed before reaching Tehran, and the mission failed. The helicopters could not lift the payload required so someone had the filters removed from the engines to increase their ability to lift. Sand got into the engines causing the failure of three of the helicopters caused by a sandstorm.

Carter halted oil imports from Iran and froze Iranian assets in the United States. Negotiations began to free the hostages and agreement was reached on Jan. 20, 1981, the day of President Reagan's inauguration. On that day the United States released most of the Iranian assets and the hostages were freed. Also, it was agreed that American hostages could not exercise their right to sue Iran for its actions against them.

Carter appointed “good ol boys” whom he felt were friends and supporters to his administration. If you were not from Georgia, you could forget being a part of the Administration. The vast majority of his appointees were incompetent. I recall interest rates for a new car were 19.8%.

Burt Lance was budget director and resigned amid allegations of wrongdoing. Incompetence was the norm of the Carter administration. After being in office for three years and nine months Carter stated, “You know, you cannot trust the Soviets. They are not a truthful people”!

>>>>>Jimmy Carter who turned out to be the biggest idiot President in our history.
>>>>
>>>>I think it could be argued that he is one of the best former Presidents. Being young, he has had a long retirement to do things.
>>>
>>>Former yes.
>>>But I think he does what he does so people will forget all the screw-ups during when his presidency.
>>
>>What were his screw-ups during his presidency? Specifically.
>
>Perhaps screw-up is a bit over the top.
>But I think he can be considered the most weakest president ever. Just read how he handled Iran and how that whole hostage thing came about. Research how he handled the economy and what he did about the energy crisis of the late 70's. In lot of cases he did nothing. He certainly could have at least evacuted the US embassy at the first sign of trouble. Some how he was able to get the Shah out to get him some treatment for his cancer but not the Anerican embassy staff. He did nothing.
>
>Heck, even his own staff members couldn't/wouldn't support him in the 1980 election against Ronald Reagan.
