John;

That is the magic word. Selfishness. In this country all to many people (those who control things) believe in “Every dog for himself”. I apologize to all lady dogs for not including them. I’ve got mine and I want more is our motto.

When Catholic Nuns came to this country from Ireland from 1845 on they created hospitals that would take care of those in need regardless of ability to pay. Until that time only those with sufficient funds could seek medical treatment. This is but one reason the Catholics were and are disliked in this country.

Today many of our hospitals will take care of those in need for free, through ER services, etc. Those with money pay more to make up for it. Basically, I think that the value system and attitude of our nation has no place for anyone in need, unless it has political value.

As long as you have the ability to work and pay taxes you have value to our nation. We have no place for those who are unable to work (for whatever reason) or are “retired”. I am thrilled at the prospect that when I retire I will not earn enough to pay my rent. Time for the bone heap.

By the way, will you be getting up to San Francisco or San Jose this trip? If so we will have a pint or two! (Make it two!)

Tom

>Well, if you travel to New Zealand and have a road crash, the taxpayer will pay for your care and nobody will think anything of it. Nobody will suggest we should block tourists from the USA ;-)

>The question for the US is "how do these people live in the US". For the most part they live by taking on poorly-paid and often illegal scutwork. Follow the reasons for "illegal employment" and you arrive at US consumer selfishness every time. Without community selfishness, there wouldn't be an illegal immigration problem.

>FWIW I'm in LA for a day and the domestics in the hotel seem to be 100% Hispanic, presumably legally employed. At least one of them has high hopes for his kids, hoping they will be able to go to college if he works hard enough and gives them enough opportunities. IMHO he is (? would be) a fantastic citizen for this country, much more so than some "born in the USA" lazy slob who watches lots of football while his kids join gangs and run riot.

>IMHO you'll see illegal immigration as long as there is plenty of illegal employment to be had and it offers people more opportunities than staying legally at home.
