I used Perforce successfully in the past.

Opening the project (either with VSS or with Perforce) took at least a minute. This was over the network. I suspect the time taken may depend on the size of the project (how many files), and on the network performance. I also believe it will be much faster if you have the Perforce or VSS database on your local machine.

As far as I remember, text files are handled the same with VSS as with Perforce - Visual FoxPro uses its own utility program to generate the text files, and hands that over to the version control program (together with the original files, like forms or classlibs).
