>>It must be heart-breaking to a US citizen to hear that, 3 years after the war, 100 US soldiers killed in Iraq in the last month. That's turning into a serious figure (and that's just this last month!) and has to smack of Vietnam. Similarly, there were, I think, c. 10 British squaddies killed in Afghanistan last month - and that smarts! UK losses seem to be about 1/10 of the US in this War on Terror but, given the force is only about 1/10 of the US force, then the losses are comparable.

Which was over three years ago. The timeframe of this war is very clear in my mind because the invasion began at almost exactly the same time I left my marriage, at the beginning of April 2003. I was moving boxes back and forth to the start-over apartment in Evanston the day the statue of Saddam was hauled down to great fanfare and press coverage. ("We're being greeted as liberators" -- another memorable quote from the administration, Cheney in this case). In personal terms that seems like eons ago, almost another lifetime. But the war goes on and on, with no end in sight.
