>>Ouch, I know I live in a different world, but this sound a bit old fashioned to me. You do allow your kids to drive (so they must be above 16 or 18?), but do not allow them to have sex? Here in holland I think there is not a parent to find who can withhold their kids that age from having sex.

>The question was whether I allow it, not whether they do it anyway. First, I should add that it's now moot, because they're 24 and 20 and not living in my house most of the time. I think it is reasonable to expect kids to wait until after high school (18 or so) for sex, and that was the expectation we communicated to our children, but I also think it's incumbent on us to teach our kids what they need to know about protecting themselves from unwanted pregnancy and disease.

I saw a documentary news report a few years ago in which they talked to some teenagers about their attitudes to sex. I will never forget one young girl who apparently hadn't had sex yet, but was intending to very soon. She was asked if she was worried about getting pregnant, and she said she wasn't. When asked why not, she replied, "Because I won't do it very often."

Unfortunately, they didn't think to ask what planet her family is from.
