>That's a depressing article. It's basically saying we're only going to get applications from people we do not want to hire! His recruiting method of harvesting the brightest while they are students sounds good if you have a big company with a ton of money, and you can wait 2 to 6 years to hire someone. What about the small companies that need to fill immidiate openings?

In article is not described one more problem.
When you train for 2-3 years prospective student and he/she pile enough experience, larger companies offer better salaries or benefits and programmer moves :-(
And small companies are again on the same place where they were.
Solutions:
- to become large company
- to make projects which could be done with knowledge and force of company owners only.
- to find proper outsourcing partner, which will help you when you need their help. This could force you make better planning of software development in short and middle terms. To have good contracts with terms, penalties, etc.
