Incidentally:
I graduated in 1984 and one of my final year's essays, on the impact of technology, was (my own idea) "Orwell or All's well - to what extent, in nineteen eighty-four, are we living in '1984'?".
It surprised me just how similar the world was - but different. Now in 2006, Airstrip 1 is the most surveilled country in ythe world, with more CCTV cameras on the street, and a larger DNA database, than the rest of Europe together.
