Problems with Windows Explorer is a common symptom of spyware/malware/adware infection. Sometimes a newly installed AV program will detect and disable some critical part of the malware, which has hooked itself into Windows Explorer, IE etc. Since that hook no longer "works", WE no longer does, either.

Check your Control Panels...Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything that looks like a "toolbar", "search helper" etc. Google any you're not sure about. Then download, install and run BOTH LavaSoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy (both available from http://www.download.com).
