Thanks. The thread you pointed out is obviously headed in the right direction but I must be a bit dim because I couldn't find a workaround there at all.

At http://www.theproblemsolver.nl/aspdevelopmentanddebugging/index.htm there was plenty on debugging COM servers, but nothing on GETOBJECT() calls without prior CREATEOBJECT() calls that I could see.
