In the middle to late 80ies there were some discussions on that over here in germany. IIRC the gist was that the screen frequency has to be higher for white background, which sometimes was a problem for the monitors back then. Todays CRT's and RAMDAC's don't have any problem to reach >95Hz, which was ok for nearly everybody. You might experiment with certain frequency/colour combinations.

That is if you are still using CRT's as the above implies. Personally I don't like TFT, but you might experiment with them. My monitor setup was often better than the rest of the computer HW - cost up front was higher, but I used every monitor for at least 2 computer generations.
