>>I guess that most people are happy with white backgrounds. I rarely see anyone else's i/f where thye've bothered to change it, either on the web or using windows apps, such as Word. I discovered way back back in the 80s, when I first got a pc, moving from green-on-black phosphor screens to more realistic, paper-like black on white, I was getting head-aches at the end of the day. I changed my colours and the head-aches ceased; I've kept it that way ever since.

IIRC the gist was that the screen frequency has to be higher for white background, which sometimes was a problem for the monitors back then. Todays CRT's and RAMDAC's don't have any problem to reach >95Hz, which was ok for nearly everybody. You might experiment with certain frequency/colour combinations.

Aye, that's all as maybe but the thing is, after so many years with pleasant (to me) eye-restful colours, I really don't like white backgrounds. Maybe it's the artist in me. I find them boring and unimaginative for a start.
