>The report has two bands. The total of a column of band1 is a variable that is supposed to SUM a value of a field. The field name is unique to the Band1 (header of the report). Band2 shows detailed items and no totals. But the Sum Total variable prints a much higher number. The "Variable to Store" on the Variables tab of the report designer shows the field name without the alias.

You didn't, perchance, sum the variable in two places? In the report variable, and in the expression field.

If you did that, you must check "Sum" only in one of those two places.
