I've been kind of doing my own scientific research on the "female executive" over the last 10 years or so. Ten yrs ago was the first time I had a female supervisor. And it was an interesting experience.

She was in her 40s, never been married and obviously had a chip on her shoulder. Working in IT, she was one of only a few females in the dept. And because of her attitude, a frequent topic of conversation. In particular, I was curious as to what happened first. Did she try to create good relationships with the opposite sex. But when she had difficulties, she decided to focus on career. Or did she have trouble with relationships, because she focused on career.

This is obviously a delima not felt by males. And she was definitely in the extreme. I ran into someone a couple years later who used to work for her. He said she came right out and told him one day that he reminded her of an old boyfriend. And no matter how hard he tried, she always gave him a poor review.

Since then, I've worked with other female execs who are far more down to earth. But you do see them tip toeing a fine line between business exec and housewife. It was interesting to talk to a female I used to work with who came across like a hard core business person in meetings. But in talking to her, the first thing she did when she came into work was go to a recipe website to plan that nites dinner.

>Not necessarily. The corporate America isn't really welcoming as a place to raise a family. Just start with the cruelty of what, two weeks maternity leave. In normal countries it's at least months, if not a whole year. Then, the cost of daycare - anyone subsidizing that? Not that I know of, these are businesses trying to turn a profit. Add to that that very few women get their old jobs back after taking a longer maternity leave - thus getting pushed back in their carreers - and you'll see how the corporate world appreciates family values. Also, when one gets a job in a different city, what are the chances that employer will help in finding a suitable job for the other spouse?

>Women aren't doing this because of any feminism - I'd bet most of them don't really know all the connotations of the term, nor do they feel like activists - they do it simply because they aren't stupid.
