I'm betting that *both* versions of how they did it are guesses, so here's mine. . .

The record pointer is just a programming creation of xBase, albeit a critical one. Most internal VFP code *must* be absolutely scrululous in accurately setting the record pointer, as this is the heart of the system.
For INDEXSEEK() I would say that they deliberately bent this rule to meet the objective.

I believe that this guess is as good as any.
