>>>Faith.

>>>My ex is Catholic and so are our daughters so I have been to my share of Catholic masses. One of my favorite parts is when the priest says "Let us celebrate the mystery of faith." There's something beautiful about that, having fervent belief in something you can never prove.

>>Well, that's the point - if you could prove it, you wouldn't have to believe in it. It would work by itself, like gravity.

>There is a beautiful passage in one of Graham Greene's last novels, "Monsignor Quixote". The old priest who is the main character says he had the most terrible dream the night before. He says in his dream Jesus came back to earth and proved beyond doubt that he was the son of God, the savior, the light. "I had nothing left to live for," the priest says.

The "credo quia absurdum est" isn't just "I believe, despite it being absurd", it works the other way too: "since it's absurd, there's no way around it but to just take it on faith". The alternative is to, well, not believe.
