The ones that get through the initial stages are separated into the 3 categories and each of the judges "sponsors" one - takes them through training, whittles them down, till there's a few from each that go through to the aired knock-out stage.

I watched quite a bit of the preliminary auditions and think I am through for this season. The guy from L.A. who is a professional backup singer caught my ear and I can see him winning, but overall the talent level seems thin.
