I guess you must've missed 10 years of marketing materials. ;-)
NO Microsoft products released in the last 10 years have implemented hard-coded reading of external file formats. That's what ODBC is for, and OLE-DB.
IMPORT is legacy behavior that dates back to dBase. (When was the last time you saw a SYLK file?)
