My comment was not meant to make a global statement of design but rather to point out the caution of changing behavior from the default. IMO, if you want to change the behavior of a control from the default you need to be absolutely sure of what you are doing because some minor improvement in one area of behavior can cause major rippples in the user's expectations of how things should behave. I only meant the comment as a caution, be careful what you do when you are altering default Windows behavior.

In most cases, if you are ameding a number, I think it is actually faster to just land on the box and type in the whole number, otherwise you need to 1) ensure that you click in exactly the correct postition and 2)you will be entering just part of the number , when I think the natural inclination is to enter the whole number which is probably on a docket

>>Borislav has shown you how to do what you are asking. I would just comment that if I were the user and I could not click right where I wanted to edit I would be annoyed. If, for example, the value was 124.53 and I wanted to make it 125.53 I would click right before the 4 so I could do a Del and type 5 and be done with it. Your approach to handling the mouse would be frustrating to me in that situation.
