I've worked on Act with another client who originally had the MS Dynamics, and it choked on performance... almost 10 minutes (no exaggeration) before the initial screen would present itself.
As for working with ACT!, I don't remember which version they had, but the only way to get at the data was by using a third-party (by Stonefield) to get at the data as it was on SQL... Something about they way they locked down the database, tables, etc.
