Sam,
I have never used standard version. From the message it looks like you need an upgrade. But that's purely strange to me because you could simply do the connection from a notepad written source code. However it might be that you're specifically using MFC SDI application which might have internal limitations (I have never used).
If you can do with C++ then I'm sure you'd be able to do with C#. Try in C#.
Also please do not use ODBC but OLEDB driver with VFP.
PS: 2005 express versions are free.
