It's just that every time I hear an argument about gay marriage, somebody always trots out that old saw about procreation, and I never understood why they thought gay marriage would make any difference to procreation.

Ah, ok then we aren't talking about survival of the species, we're just talking about out procreating other peoples.
Generally I always thought people meant the species itself when they talk about the need for procreation as an argument against gay marriage.
