>When I was at Texas A&M, whenever the opposing coaching got up from his chair to make his case to the ref, the whole arena, all twelve thousand Aggies, would yell "Sit down bus driver". During the team introduction at the start of a basketball game, everyone in the stand would open up a news paper and rattle it. Amazing how loud twelve thousand rattling news papers can get. That was a lot of fun. Wow, that was over twenty years ago.

Yup. Some college fun we had, eh?

When I was a student at the University of Illinois and a member of the Marching Illini, referees HATED any call made in front of the band because they knew that if the band didn't like the call we'd stand up (all 300 of us) and yell BULL CHIPS! in unison.

It always sounded like we said something different.

And then there was the infamous sing-song "throws like a lady" chant.

You do NOT want a block of 300+ students on your bad side, but you also don't want them running amok. Or worse, 20,000+ (and they DID take our lead).

There's a good reason to have control, to a point.

Sometimes the band department Got A Memo about Keeping It Down. Sometimes the control went overboard, and there are pictures somewhere of the Marching Illini actively sitting on their hands when everyone was expecting the school song.

Reason in all things is good.
