I think their story says a tremendous amount about the power of love. (And, of course, about the stupidity of the royal system, which didn't allow them to marry in the first place.) They went through a lot to ultimately be allowed to spend their lives together--obviously, it was about true feeling, not about who's the prettiest.

And, fwiw, Charles is no prize. If I were choosing on looks, he wouldn't be my choice. (But Diana did do her job--William is a gorgeous young man.)
