Babies dropped off go right into the social services system here (as far as I know). There may be a waiting period to see if anyone comes to claim the child (due to 2nd thoughts). No one is contacted and they are not allowed to ask any questions when a child is dropped off to protect privacy. The end goal is a safe environment for a baby so the more privacy given the more likely a new unwed teenage mother will drop a baby off rather than along the side of a road or on someone's doorstep. Most likely, someone would drive to another town to do it though since you tend to recognize people in small towns. I never heard of a 'baby drop' until that story. Here you physically hand a baby over, although I wouldn't doubt that in some cases the child is left on a doorstep. In the days of the depression, that was actually more common than people knew. When a family was starving, some would leave their babies on the doorstep of a home better off and then disappear to another state.

>>In North Carolina, anyone can take a baby to a hospital or fire station or police station and leave it - no questions asked. It came about after a baby was found on the side of the road a couple of years ago.

>We do have only one baby window in our country. I remember the out cry in the community as it has been established. Especially as it's located in a pure catholic part of Switzerland. But today it's well accepted.

>The most important point IMHO is, that the "drop off" can be made completely anonymous, which is the case at the baby hatch. I don't know, but I guess every fire station and hospital in the USA has some security cameras working on premises. Therefore, there are some "footprints".. But being able to go to any fire station or hospital and leave the baby is for sure a good thing.

>What happens to the baby? How long until it's going to be put up for adoption? What happens when the mother decides she wants her baby back?
