>Google has been giving Microsoft something to think about as far as who the top software company is. (Which I think is a setup Microsoft enjoys as a way of keeping its own people churning at full speed -- IBM, Apple, Borland, and Netscape are among companies who have been cast in the same role). But are they in the software development tools arena at all? Maybe I'm even more out of touch with bleeding edge technologies than I thought.

No, they are mostly out of the idea of producing development tools, but instead, they heavily support open source projects in this space. Guido von Rossum (Python's father) is now working at Google while he keeps with his Python 3000 project. Google also sponsors major automated test conferences around the world, and they support many languages, frameworks and databases in the open source space.

Look at what languages they support for their APIs and you'll see anything from JavaScript to .NET to Java, C++, Python et al.
