Bonnie,

Not to get argumentative, but the whole "best to do it in a SP" idea is getting a bit of a workout here. There is nothing wrong with manipulating data in the application (a la Linq or with already-existing DataSet methods). The SP does not have to do *everything* and in fact, may not be suited to do *everything*.

Why would I argue with that? Others have said that "SP is always best" and that you use SP because all processing should be on the server. I'm not responsible for what they say: I'm simply asking them to justify their stance.

The only statement that *I've* made regarding SPs being "best", is that most DBAs want to limit access to the database through SPs only. I don't remember what others have said or implied, but this is that *I* meant by it.

I'm not surprised to hear that. But please consider that I've never asked you to justify the statements made by others. I don't want to have to do it, either. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
