The billiards I'm thinking of would be "carom billiards" and played on a table with no pockets as opposed to "pocket billiards" which, I guess, would/could be played on a snooker table.

I think, officially, it's the other way round: snooker is played on a billiards table. :-)
BTW "Pocket billiards" in UK speak is also a euphonism for something that only a man can practise, :-)
