The idea is, if you can't get a decent shot at pocketing the ball, you leave the shot with no prospective object balls easy to pot, preferably with the cue ball hard up against the cushion, or better still, having snookered you oponent in so doing. Sometimes these "duels" can go on for ages. One match the other night had them spend some 20 mins over the yellow ball (once all the reds are pocketed the other colours have to be potted in sequence).


So it's a method of preventing your opponent from getting a good shot.
In golf it's just the opposite. You can't interfere with your opponent at all. Infact, you do all you can to let him have the best chance of making a good shot.

The great Bob Hope use to do that. Funny, but totally illegal shot in golf.
