It's obvious they didn't intend to kill it immediately. Honestly I can't fathom WHAT their intent was because it makes absolutely no sense to me the way it was handled over the years.
They did stuff the fox in a closet though - only developers who had used previous versions or who needed DBF access were allowed to peek in the closet.
