Naomi, it is a DATE field. It displays normally when I browse it in FPD2.6 but not in VFP9 (regardless of which settings I use for SET DATE and SET CENTURY). Yet the dates in other tables from the same FPD2.6 app display correctly. I've also played around with CODE PAGE but that also doesn't make any difference.
