I tried copying to a different drive letter (different partition, I guess), but get the same problem.

Especially when you try to create a new project with the same files. To test this, my suggest would be to copy off the files, delete them completely and run some diagnostics on your drive. I would suggest a de-frag, but that would probably only put another file on the 'bad' spot and move your problem around.
