You mention the snipping (is that a word?), but there are more methods practiced here. Some answer at the top, some insert comments, some at the bottom, some replace text with a [SNIP], some simply remove texts. All these behaviors are common here and esp. the snipping regularly causes co-readers to misinterprete what's written.

I think all these behaviors are caused primarily by the way the UT's interface is designed. That design is actually quite odd and unique. It has some real advantages, but also some disadvantages. The various methods people here use are in part their attempts to live with the disadvantages. If the interface would be redesigned, some methods would disappear or change.

The design has not really changed in all the years I'm present here. In the mean time weblogs and forums elsewhere have evolved and have some superior characteristics I miss here.

It may well be that a better design reduces misinterpretations and therefore also reduces dispute.

Let's develop superb standards that will end the holy wars.
