The issue is likely that you don't have the appropriate "packet-writing" software installed on your laptop. If you install the Roxio packet-writing component on the laptop you should be able to read the CD, even if the laptop CD drive is not a burner.

BTW after having a number of issues with Roxio I've switched to Nero and never had any problems, burning CDs or DVDs. Highly recommended.
