A friend of mine used to be an elementary school teacher - grades 1 and 2. She had a kid in her class who used to fall asleep in class all the time, so when she was talking to the boy's mother, she asked what time he went usually went to bed, and the mother told her about 11:00pm normally. This kid was 8 years old. Lois told her the child needed more sleep than that, but the mother told her that if she tried to make him go to bed earlier, he would cry and yell.

Lois was appalled and all she could think of at the time was to ask the mother how it came to be that an 8 year old was in charge of the household.
