Well no, you've actually confirmed by your interjections that the rule should be the same as in Serbian - the word "only" is actually a prefix to whatever it qualifies. And "can you only open that file" can quite well be understood as "and do nothing else to it".
There was a pop song decades ago, where the chorus went "volela tebe samo sam ja" - "loved you only did I", which is equivalent to none but "only I did love you" (implying "nobody else did"). Another possible wrong position would be "I only loved you" (but didn't feed you, cheer you or pay you).
IOW, we need to be careful about this.
