This reply is for everyone ...
Thanks guys!! Most informative (especially Terry's very helpful "Your son's a PI? Let HIM investigate this then!" <bg>)
I've sent him an email with all your suggestions and I'll let you know what he decides (dunno when he's gonna buy this though ... may be a few weeks or so).
If anyone has anything else they'd like to add, I'll send him another email. =0)
Thanks again!!!!

>>Speaking of phones, my oldest son has been calling me every day for a week, yakking my ear off asking about what kind of phone he should get. How the heck should I know?!? He said "Well, you're a geek and you know geeky stuff, so you should know about this. And even if you personally don't, you have lots of other geeky friends who might know". So, I guess I'm looking for recommendations. <g>

>Probably something like a Treo (the Windows version, not the Palm version), or one of the various PDA-style phones, or the Motorola Q. Someone mentioned the new 6800 Mogul - that looks like it's going to be a pretty slick phone. In either case, he can use software like PDANet to use it as a modem. One thing to be aware of - even though some phone plans give you "unlimited" data access on the phone, as soon as you start using it as a link for a computer, they want you to also have the normal data plan (some will hit you with major charges if they determine that you're doing this w/o having the plan).

www.phonescoop.com has info on just about every phone.

>(warning, non-biased suggestion following): If he happens to live by a Wireless Toyz store,
www.wirelesstoyz.com, he could stop in and talk to them. They carry all of that stuff and can make suggestions.
