They assume (usually correctly) that most tourists do not speak coloquial Spanish.

Well, In turkey, they often can see you're from the the netherlands and speak simple dutch to you... I've had the same experience in the dominican republic... As for calling names, of course I would not know. I don't speak any turkish nor spanish
