Everything is proprietary these days, and I don't like being ordered around that way. If it's unavoidable, then that's one thing, but this is eminently avoidable.


Do you have a cell phone? Charging works exactly the same way, except you can charge an iPod by connecting it to a USB drive as well as an electrical outlet.
