Actually, not all that literal. As I understand it the term "spam" comes from the Monty Pythons cafeteria sketch where they sell "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, sausage, egg, Spam, Spam and Spam". ie summat that keeps coming at you.
