Ah, the United Fruit Company. Guatemala particulary problematic. When E H Hunt engineered the overthrow of Arbenz in 1954 it was pretty much because United Fruit Company figured anybody who wanted to exercise the clause in the contract that said the government could by unused land back for what it was declared at for tax purposes must be a Communist <s>. Nicaragua and El Salvador similar. Marines, 1922, 1928 something like that.

(coincidentally, John Foster Dulles's law firm represent UFCO )

>Most of the internal conflicts the U.S. supported in one way or another in South and Central America were unknown to the general public. Many Americans would claim it was an outright lie. There are too many embarrassing situations the U.S. took part in and is responsible for to list them. Just wanted to keep it real.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
