No the alternative for what you're thinking is the Wii. I have one and it's awesome. Mario Galaxies got a 9.5/10 review rating. And I've read a couple things from developers that they like developing for the Wii also.

We were discussing the PS3 as an alternative to a standalone Bluray player. There's many issues with standalone Bluray. Most of these are not an issue with the PS3. Although, from what I've heard, the PS3 does not do a good job of upscaling standard DVDs.
