VFP 9, SP2 has recently been released and basically ends development of VFP from Microsoft. However, it will be supported through 2014. (see http://msdn.com/vfoxpro). This does not mean your VFP applications will stop working, just that after 2014 Microsoft will no longer provide support.

Without knowing some specifics on your needs, it is difficult to recommend one product over another. Kevin has recommended SQL Server, which is a great product, but you will still need to develop a front-end application in some language to use it.
