For me, that's one reason why I enjoy the UT less than some other places. So after many years of saying nothing about it, when an appropriate opportunity presented itself, I spoke up.

I thought the opposition was because people can pay for UT service if they feel like it rather than being forced to navigate festoons of google ads. ;-)

Whatever. The tragedy I see is fragmentation of a community I've cared about over the years. We're doing it to ourselves with divisive behaviors and claimed privileges. Community only survives if members are willing to be led by people with whom they disagree. Leaders can choose to rely on brute force to get their way, as we've seen, or they can rely on persuasion, or they can act as if they are anointed by God and need not justify themselves at all. But if people are free to walk away, only persuasion works in the end. IMHO. We'll see if I am right.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
