There was a time when I would buy what I knew was a quality piece of equipment. Working for Ampex I had expectations which were subjective as well as objective. That was part of the training we received. At one time there were five VCR manufacturer’s in Japan, who made all VCR’s! That was the period around the late 1970’s to 1990. You would find a name brand you knew (like Emerson) that may have been made by Sony, JVC, etc. What was neat was Ampex received royalties for every VCR made regardless of who manufactured it. Ampex invented video recording and much more.
Today it is a new world. Those great quality Sony electronics machines are probably made in China. Do your home work, check the guarantee and go for the gold! You might just pick up a great unit which is not too popular or even known to the public.
