>Interestingly (and scary when you think about it), I read a study recently that showed that the majority of hispanics when illegally here are Democrats (in their thinking) and then when they become citizens they switch to Republicans. I've actually spoken with a few friends of mine who made such a switch and surprisingly, many (most that I know actually) once they are legally here want the flow to stop and don't want their ex-countryman to come here illegally. They even become very Republican and rightwing in their views outside of the immigration issue as well. Go figure. Only time will tell.

Amazingly, I've seen a similar shift among our Bosnians from the first two colonizations (after each world war), when they met their cousins who came as refugees during Yugoslav wars. It went as far as "Is it possible that our parents were like this when they came? You locals really did a damn good job tolerating them". I somehow got the impression that these 2nd generation colonists had more sympathy for their "native" neighbors than for their direct kin from the mountains.
