If you're using Word 2007 and Automation you can use the PDF plugin for Office 2007. I'm pretty sure the Automation interfaces extend to the PDF creation out of all Word doucments as well because it's essentially an add-in to Office. It's free but wasn't shipped in the box because of the crap Adobe put up for their 'open' format.

Won't work with earlier versions of Office though.
