>For the 25k I spent on school, they could've damn well tailored it to what I wanted to take. Other than taxes, nothing else forces me to spend money on things I hate to do. It would be like buying a fancy vacation and being told that in addition to the places you want to go, there are several others you must go to just because they're "good for you".

I think it can be assumed that you don't know what's good for you and what's not, because you are yet to learn of what's inside the thing. Once you open it, it's kind of late to uninstall and return :). OTOH, you may actually like it, can't know before you try.

I think we're basically discussing the border between mandatory and facultative (term used here, for those you choose yourself) courses, and another border which, once crossed, permits a person to choose further course of education. The subject is too wide and too deep, we can practically get lost in it. It also seems this is one of those threads over undecidable issues, where everyone feels prompted to speak up (see who's talking :), and everyone is ready to stay with his own opinion :). We'd better drop the matter.
