>>>It may be 'you' the public, but please don't include me in the 'us'. ;)

>>>In fact, I think it's driven less by the public per se than by Madison Avenue. Individually, the 'public' is probably ok, but collectively, the public becomes a herd with Madison Avenue the drovers.

>>>For my money, the single most useless industry, if not the most harmful, is the fashion industry, and when you combine that industry with Madison Avenue... well, you have the potential for an awful lot of damage to an awful lot of tweens and teens who eventially become damaged adults.

>>Peole come in all shapes and sizes but you'd never know it from the fashion industry.

>>The Pam Anderson thing is slightly different I think. To find one version of women fine to be looked at (Cheerleader in heroes and Tony Sopranos daughter often seem to pop up here) and another disgusting seems troubling to me.

>Speaking only for myself, it has to do with what one is trading on. Pam doesn't have any actual talent, so she is trading entirely on her body. I find that relatively objectionable when compared with someone trading on [at least a perceived] acting ability or other real talent.
>
>If two people are outwardly attractive, I will certainly appreciate the one trading on talent far more than the one trading only on looks. In fact, in many cases, the level of talent often creates a sort of anticipation that enhances the appearance.
>
>That, of course is only with regard to those people I see but don't actually know. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, and for me, trading on looks detracts from my perception of someone's beauty.

>And yes, the stupid adulation of vacant minds does add to the problem.

Hmm, she's raised something like $12M for AIDS/HepC causes and is a long-time PETA supporter (whether you like that or not, she has the courage to be an activist for her convictions). I'd guess she's a good mother to her children; given the level of scrutiny she faces, if she weren't we'd know all about it (think Britney).

Think about all the women you know who haven't made comparable achievements. Do they have no "actual talent", or would their talent levels be even lower than that?
