And if they had guns, they would go with a bang? They WERE NOT ROUNDED UP. They were taken one by one, or in small groups, and I'm almost positive some of them did have guns. But then, those coming to arrest them had vehicles, at least someone with a machine gun, and were never coming alone.

I am surprised. Which others?

To add to this story, in the Yugoslav wars we had another country which had gun control since forever. It worked Swiss-style - there was a lot of weapons nearby, according to the defense doctrine of armed people. Any other weapons were under control - you could keep them at home, you could have a license to carry concealed, but they had to be registered. And when a cop was shot, you had to submit your piece for "technical check", i.e. the ballistics.

But when the war happened, everybody had weapons, because the gun control simply vanished. Those who were supposed to control them were videotaping the smugglers and played the tapes on state TV as a pretext to go to war - and did nothing to break the smuggling chain or to arrest the smugglers. And those controlled public-property collective defense pieces were finding their way into various groups' hands, too.

You can't blame the gun control when it is just revoked.
